If it hadn't been for my experience of working for three months at Adagio's in 1999, I would probably not be doing what I am doing now. Jain sensei did me the massive favour of introducing me to Amano-san, who for some reason agreed to let a 19 year old English boy with not the greatest track record for behaviour, and only the most basic knowledge of Japanese, live in his house and work for him between March and June of that year. Thanks to the kindness I was shown during that time, I managed to have an incredible three months, and to learn probably more than most people learn in a year (thanks to my busy working week!). The staff were all brilliant, and didn't resent having to tell an idiot how to say 'salt', and the customers were very forgiving when I misunderstood them, spilled things on them, and mixed up their orders. Thanks to a friendship I sparked up with one of Adagio's regulars (hi Fuku chan!), I was able to get back into music again, and it is because of this I am now living in London, studying Japanese, and recording a new CD. Thankyou very much everybody from Otsuki, and I hope you'll forgive my slackness when it comes to getting in touch sometimes. Amano-san, I'll be over soon with the smelliest cheese ever to make up for it:)

A dagio. For me, the place is my home from home. The comfort zone. Fabulous food with vegetarian choices galore. The place where I met up with my friends, colleagues or just when I wanted a nightcap on my own. The place where you are never made to feel that you have to move on. Go slow and even slower upstairs world artists, classical and contemporary. Stare and be taken in by the art exhibitions. Buy cakes from Fujiya (and notice Peko chan's seasonal costume changes). Bny wine from the shop at the other entrance. All of this because the master himself exudes and epitomises compassion, friendship and loyalty. I've been in love with this place since August 1991 and I'm still promoting it ...Anupameya Jain(ALT on JET Programme form 1991-1994 Yamanashi)

N estled in the loving embrace of the mountains surrounding the Otsuki-shi, one finds a hidden treasure: Adagio's restaurant and cafe. Otsuki-shi is a crossroads within Yamanashi, providing a stop-over point for those heading from Tokyo (or other points North or West) to Fuji-San. Like Otsuki, Adagio's is also a crossroads: a place with an international face, where Nihon-jin and Gaikoku-jin mix, mingle, and make happy memories. For the many foreigners that have spent time under Adagio's roof and in the loving care of its proprieter, Hiroshi Amano, Adagio's is their home away from home. Long before Starbucks established a ubiquitous presence in Japan, Adajio's was a rare place where, like in Western countries, one could experience the enjoyable atmosphere of a Parisian cafe. Adagio's is a place where many happy marriages started, where the eye is always entertained with artful floral arrangements and local artsts' displays, and where the music is always warming the soul. Did I forget to mention the food?? Wow. There are dishes and wine that I had at Adagio's over 7 years ago that are still tempting my tastebuds. Suffice it to say that, when I dream of Japan, I dream of Adagio's: it is the one place in Japan where I will always feel at home-- like I could walk in, hang my coat, and pick up conversation where I last left off. Thank you, Hiroshi San.

8TH The Tales of Rusputin

Dear Hiroshi-san,
Thank you for your message! As always, it was very nice to hear from you. I'm glad you are genki. Congratulations on receiving the Number 1 ranking in the gourmet guide in Yamanashi! However, I am not surprised because I know how great Adagio's is. I look forward to my next visit there.
TALES OF RASPUTIN
In Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, there is a quaint, little folk music club called Rasputin's that features a variety of acts from around North America on weekends. On Wednesday evenings, they have an open stage there where local talent is encouraged to perform, be it music, dance or spoken word.
It was there that I first mustered the courage to strap on my guitar in public and sing a few original songs and it was a great experience. What made the experience that much better was the fact that everyone in the audience was focused on the stage. There was no chattering or mulling about to distract those watching or those performing and if someone felt a need to talk, they were quietly reminded by the manager that such behavior was inappropriate in that environment. I played there many times after that initial performance and I carried those fond memories to Japan where I taught in Yamanashi for three years, beginning in 1995.
I played with a variety of bands in and around Yamanashi during my stay in Japan and I enjoyed that but I occasionally missed the intimacy of Rasputin's. So, in 1996, I decided to solicit the talents of local AETs and Japanese friends to create the inaugural "Tales of Rasputin". The idea was that performers could perform for 10 or 15 minutes in front of an audience that was attentive and appreciative. We had a variety of acts that first year and the show ended up with three hours of solid entertainment. Adagio's was the perfect venue for this event and Hiroshi Amano's support helped make "Tales of Rasputin" an overwhelming success that year.
"Tales of Rasputin II" followed the next year and, with any luck and the support of Hiroshi and Adagio's, the event will continue to grow and prosper for many years to come.

One of my favourite children's stories is "The Little Prince" by Antoine DeSaint-Exupery. I am reminded of this tale when I think about the past three years I've spent in Otsuki. This is how the story goes: I was dropped in my little mountain town and soon after introduced to Hiroshi. I didn't realize at the time that he would be my lifeline here. It's a rare find indeed. Hiroshi. Adagios. I gorged on delicious food, wonderful conversation and warm acceptance. Once I stepped into the glow of that place and was engulfed by its charm I forever more claimed it as my haven, as many have before me. Otsuki is an ol' fashioned kinda place but Hiroshi breathes a fire into it that keeps the east side raging.
So Antoine De Saint-Exupery writes:
"I can't play with you," the fox said. "I'm not tamed."
"Ah! Excuse me, " said the little prince. But upon reflection he added, "What does tamed mean?"
"You're not from around here," the fox said. "What are you looking for?"
"I'm looking for people," said the little prince. "What does tamed mean?"
"People," said the fox, "have guns and they hunt. It's quite troublesome. And they also raise chickens. That's the only interesting thing about them. Are you looking for chickens?"
"No," said the little prince, "I'm looking for friends. What does tamed mean?"
"It's something that's been too far neglected. It means, 'to create ties'…"
"To create ties?"
"That's right," the fox said. "For me you're only a little boy just like a hundred thousand other little boys. And I have no need of you. And you have no need of me, either. For you I'm only a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But if you tame me, we'll need each other."
Perhaps it was I who came here looking for friends and perhaps it was you who was tamed, or maybe it was a little bit of each, but either way I am grateful for what we've shared, Hiroshi. I do hope I can find a place back home to ease into as I have in your place for three years. Let's meet for the next big party in Toronto…but no weddings

Hanging with Hiroshi San
When I lived in Japan,Adagio's was a home away from home for me. Where else could I get both a Bailey's specialty coffee and a steaming plate of Fettucine Alfredo? The best part of the experience though, was hanging out with my host. Hiroshi San always had a warm welcome for me and I was guaranteed a laugh or two. From classical music to Sumo wrestling, the conversation were endless and entertaining. Now thousands of miles away from Otsuki,I need only think of my frequent visits to Adagios and the warmth fills me. Thanks Hiroshi San,you are one of those rare gifts life something unveils.
